Until the XIXth century, they lived only on agriculture and breeding. Around 1850, the monks added another traditional activity, in addition to agriculture, to ensure enough income for the community. After having tried brewery in vain, they successfully turned to milling and created the mill Moulin de la Trappe, still in operation today.
In 1932, the monks developed the Germalyne using stabilised wheat germs. Afterwards, they have continued improving their processes and have diversified their products.
Nowadays, the monks of the Abbaye de Sept-Fons live on the manufacturing of food supplements, a semi-traditional activity, while they continue with agriculture and breeding.
