nontoxic. Names: sodium carbonate, sodium carbonate, washing soda, soda ash, soda, washing soda.
Warning: do not confuse with his little brother baking soda and caustic soda NaOH (very dangerous).
Chemical formula: Na2CO3
pH: 11.4
Appearance: Small crystals
Manufacturing: It is obtained in 2 ways, either directly in deposits or salt lakes, or synthesized from salt and limestone. The ammonia used in the process of manufacture, but it is regenerated each time at the end of the process (that is recycled for the same purpose). In time it was obtained from plant ash and was mistakenly called "soda".
Industrial uses: It is used in the manufacture of glass, chemicals (including phosphates), detergents (soaps, detergents, powdered they contain 5 to 20% of sodium carbonate), in metallurgy (desulfurizer) and for the manufacture of sodium bicarbonate.
